What Is ‘IP version 6’? Why Is IPv6 Important to Internet Users?
2012.09.12.12:28
July, 2012: Perhaps you’ve read that IPv4 is ‘running out of addresses’, and that the new ‘IPv6’ is going to solve the problem. This is indeed the case, and About.com explains why here…
Answer: Until this summer, the world was at risk of running out of available computer addresses. You see, every device that connects to the Internet needs a serial number, much like every legal car on the road requires a license plate. But just like the 6 or 8 characters of a license plate are limited, there is a mathematical limit to how many different addresses are possible for Internet devices.

Banking and Internet Explorer 9

From the numerous threads in the Windows Secrets Lounge regarding my story on IE 9 (http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread.php/138881-It-s-time-to-move-up-to-Internet-Explorer-9), I see that some of you have issues with banking websites and the new browser. Here’s a tip that was passed on to me since the publication of that article. In IE 9, click Tools, then Internet Options (or press ALT+T+O), then click Advanced. Ensure that the Do not save encrypted pages to disk check box is unchecked.
I still stand by my conclusions in the article (http://windowssecrets.com/top-story/its-time-to-move-up-to-internet-explorer-9/) and urge you to re-read it. Try out the tweaks, including compatibility mode, when a site doesn’t work the way it used to. If you still find that it doesn’t work for you, then uninstall IE 9, but I’m still changing its status in the Patch Watch table to indicate that people should install it on Vista and Windows 7 systems to help ensure their systems are secure. An update out Tuesday in the form of KB2545698 (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;2545698) that fixes blurring in IE 9 may also help to solve some people’s issues with Clear Text, reported in various forums.
What to do: Reread the IE9 article, try installing it along with installing KB 2545698 when you do.

10 Things to Know About the Move to IPv6
2011.06.07.14:10
The Internet has been rolling along for decades on the strength of IPv4 and its numbering system, which has supplied billions of addresses. As long as more addresses were available, few people thought about them. But the booming popularity of the Internet has finally soaked up nearly all those fresh numbers: In February, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) allocated the last of its unused large blocks of IPv4 addresses to regional Internet registries. On Wednesday, World IPv6 Day will turn the new protocol on at hundreds of companies, agencies and universities for testing. Suddenly, IT administrators and consumers alike are starting to think more about IP addresses. Here are the answers to a few questions about the numbers that make the Internet work.
