NTWind VistaSwitcher Version: 1.1.5

Freeware Installation (WIN)

Release Date: 2012.05.12

VistaSwitcher is an enhancement/replacement for the hoary, ancient, alt-tab program switcher attached to Vista like the vestigial leg bones buried deep inside a blue whale. As well as providing a much more aesthetically pleasing task switching window, VistaSwitcher provides a lot more functionality.

As well as providing a much more aesthetically pleasing task switching window, VistaSwitcher provides a lot more functionality–especially if you have many instances of the same application, such as multiple Word or Excel documents. VistaSwitcher shows you a larger preview window, making it easier to pick the document you like.

VistaSwitcher adds a new feature, alt-` (that’s the backtick, located just above the tab on most keyboards), which shows you just the windows associated with the current application. This allows you to quickly switch from one Excel sheet to another without being distracted by Word documents or browser windows.

VistaSwitcher also allows for keyboardless application switching. You can set it to use the right mouse button and mouse wheel to switch–hold down the right mouse button and scroll through the app list with the wheel. For further customizability, you can make the task window ‘sticky’–it won’t go away when you release the summoning keys, but will wait for you to hit enter or otherwise confirm your selection. This can prevent accidental switches, and makes it easier to find a window in a long list, as you don’t need to keep holding down keys while you scroll. (You can also set the number of items which show in the list, as well as the default position of the window.)

Alt-Tab is a useful Windows keyboard shortcut that lets users view a list of open windows and tab quickly among them. The Alt-Tab dialog is definitely more function than form, though; it’s just a gray box with icons representing each window, and the windows’ names appear as you tab through them. VistaSwitcher takes the Alt-Tab function and jazzes it up a bit. Though this program isn’t really a big deal in the grand scheme of things, it’s a definite improvement if you’re a frequent Alt-Tabber.

When VistaSwitcher is running it appears unobtrusively as an icon in the system tray. Simply Alt-Tab as you usually would, and VistaSwitcher takes over with a much nicer interface. The default setting shows a preview of the your desktop, with each window appearing in turn as you tab through them. You can also choose another preview style or turn the preview off entirely. VistaSwticher has a few other options for customization; you can set the location of the preview on the screen, enable mouse-over selection on the task list, and specify how the program behaves when used with more than one monitor. VistaSwitcher has a Web page that describes its features, but not really a Help file per se; this isn’t a huge drawback, as the program is pretty self-explanatory. Overall, we think that VistaSwitcher is a very nice improvement over the default Windows interface, and anyone who uses Alt-Tab with any regularity should check it out.

VistaSwitcher installs and uninstalls without issues.
