Windows 10 in a Linux VM

Considering that the license has already been paid for, it is likely a worthwhile endeavor to install Windows 10 in a virtual machine, rather than dual booting. After all, this is Windows – using a fresh ISO direct from Microsoft eliminates OEM-bundled bloatware which typically accompanies a new computer. Additionally, using a VM for Windows also prevents any future Windows update from interfering with your computer’s boot partition, which may render either or both operating systems unbootable.

Ever since the earliest days of computing, scientists and engineers have focused on building machines that were smaller, faster, and less expensive than the previous generation. Now, one British man has taken it upon himself to reverse that trend. James Newman, of Cambridge, recently unveiled his completed Megaprocessor a fully functional CPU built to human scale, with LEDs that light up at every stage of the computational process to show how data moves through a circuit.

The Megaprocessor is a 16-bit design with four general-purpose registers, a program counter, a processor status register, and a stack pointer. It has 256 bytes of memory and a 500W power supply (most of the latter is dedicated to the LEDs). The memory block contains 27,000 transistors. The CPU’s transistor count comes out to 15,300, but much of this is also devoted to the LEDs. Subtract those from the equation, and the total CPU transistor count seems to be about 6,800. That’s roughly 2x as many as the original 6502 microprocessor, though the 6502 was a bit smaller. Computation is handled via a 16-bit ALU and 16-bit adder, there’s no word on whether or not Newman intends to offer a separate floating point unit, though the installation requirements for such hardware would likely be formidable.

Create a virtual hard disk

By Ed Bott

If you want to add a hard disk to your PC, you need to open the case and fuss with cables.

Unless that new disk is a virtual hard disk (VHD), that is. A VHD is just another file until you double-click it. Then it mounts in File Explorer (Windows Explorer in Windows 7) and looks exactly like a regular hard disk, with its own drive letter. You can create subfolders in a VHD, add and remove files, and even encrypt it using BitLocker.

To get started, open the Disk Management console (Diskmgmt.msc). In Windows 10, you can right-click Start and click the Disk Management shortcut.

Open the Action menu and then click Create VHD. Choose a location for your VHD file, select a size, and specify whether it’s a fixed size (it will use all the space you allotted to it) or dynamically expanding (the VHD grows as you add files).

Don’t close Disk Management yet. You’ll need to initialize the new disk, create a simple volume, and give it a drive letter. But when that’s done, you have a VHD that you can use to store any type of files. And you can move that entire drive to another PC just by moving or copying the VHD file.
